Ordering coffee in Italy is simple once you know the vocabulary. Here is how to order Italian coffee like a local — and how to do the same at Merchant of Venice.
The Basics
- Espresso (caffe) — a short, strong shot, the default order in Italy.
- Macchiato — espresso “stained” with a spoonful of milk foam.
- Cappuccino — espresso, steamed milk and foam, traditionally a morning drink.
- Latte — in Italy, ask for a caffe latte, or you will get a glass of milk.
- Americano — espresso with hot water, for a longer drink.
When Italians Drink What
Cappuccino is usually a breakfast drink, often with a pastry. After lunch or dinner, most Italians switch to an espresso. Nobody will stop you ordering a cappuccino in the afternoon at Merchant of Venice — but it helps to know the tradition.
Pair Your Coffee
Italian pastries and desserts are made for coffee. Try a cappuccino with a pastry at brunch, or an espresso with tiramisu to finish dinner. See the full story in the history of Italian coffee.
